Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise which focusses on core strength, flexibility and postural alignment. The exercise was developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, hence the name. The exercises are either done on floor mats or on the reformer machine as well as other smaller pieces of equipment. The reformer machine uses springs as resistance which can be adjusted to support a weaker body or to push a stronger one. The range of exercises and extensive training for Pilates teachers means that anyone can do Pilates and get toned, flexible and strong.
Pilates is a very accessible form of exercise and at POWMAK we pride ourselves on the quality and expertise of our teachers which allows us to support anyone in exercise. Whether you’re just starting a fitness journey, recovering from an injury or competing in your favourite sport, we can help you to get the best from your body.
Pilates (pronounced “pih-LAH-tees”) was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. Originally he referred to it as ‘Contrology’ and it was only after his death in 1967 that the practice become known as ‘Pilates’. Joseph believed that by focusing on controlled movement through mind-body awareness, a better connection would be established with your body and the more benefits you’d gain from your workouts. He said: ‘Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through the proper repetition of it’s exercise you gradually. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883 to Greek parents and was by all accounts a sickly child. He contracted rheumatic fever and rickets and also suffered from chronic asthma. Read more…

Read MoreOver the 7 years that we’ve been established, we have helped so many people get back to fitness or journey into a new career. Here are just a few of the great stories from our lovely POWMAKers.
Since doing 2-3 classes a week my body shape has changed considerably, I now have toned arms, legs, tummy and especially, great flexibility which is very important as you get older.
My son Jatin had a knee operation and I took him to several physios and chiropractors because he was badly losing muscle on his thigh. I realised there was only one person that could get through to Jatin and make him realise the importance of strengthening the muscles around the joints and making him do his exercises. That person was Sam from POWMAK. Very quickly my son was walking without crutches and was finally able to come on holiday with the family.
I have found doing Pilates has made me more flexible, my joints are much stronger and over the past 5 years I have even started running and gradually built up to 10k runs. I have less flare ups and I am able to enjoy doing activities I had struggled with previously.
I used to play a lot of rugby and recently switched to the vets team. In a particularly difficult match I dislocated my shoulder. The team at POWMAK were able to provide a fantastic environment in which I could rehab my shoulder and yet still work hard on my abs, legs and cardio. Thank you team POWMAK, I can now work really hard in POWMIX and can touch my toes!
When I first came to POWMAK I was in a lot of pain – it hurt to drive and work, even walk and sleep. I have gradually strengthened my muscles and Pilates keeps me pain free. My posture has improved and I feel much stronger and more toned too which is great!
I no longer have significant back pain. I’m conscious that I’m stronger and fitter than I was. For example if I’m on my feet for a long time I can cope with that better. I’m also more relaxed in my shoulders and neck and I think I hold myself with a broader chest. I’m also more aware of posture and balance generally and can identify where any weaknesses are as I exercise.
I just felt the need to type a quick ‘Thank you’ message to you and all of your teachers! I am absolutely loving the classes and I cannot believe that after such a short time I am finally practically pain free! For the first time in nearly two years, I was able to dance when teaching last night – Heaven! I wish I had joined earlier! Thank you!!!!
I spend a lot of time at my desk, I find it hard to find time to keep fit and healthy, as a result, suffer from back pain. POWMAK literally transformed my life, low impact training has made me fitter, healthier, and more flexible. My wife sent me to POWMAK after a hip replacement operation four years ago. The teachers have been patient and motivational. I never thought it was possible for me to get to a point of being this strong and active much less enjoying my twice weekly visits to the studio. And the best thing of all? My wife and daughter are happy!
I had to leave POWMAK as I was moving out of the area and there is nothing like POWMAK anywhere else. While I was away I put on weight and the first thing I did when I got back was rejoin POWMAK and I have lost 2st in 1 month. They really have a full body fitness and health approach. I started with Sam when she was in the small studio at home. I was very weak and hypermobile. I had great difficulty moving with strength and my joints were unstable. First I tried yoga then realised that Pilates actually builds the deep stabilising muscles around the joints. My body has completely changed. I now feel strong and confident and I’m able to push myself in POWMIX without fear of injury or joint damage.

You can wear normal gym kit for any Pilates class. If you’re comfortable in more tight fitting clothing then that helps us to see your movement, but it’s not essential. If you prefer loose fitting clothing, just make sure that you have something tight underneath that won’t ride up and make you feel uncomfortable.
You’ll be going through full range of movement so you’ll need to make sure that your clothing isn’t see-through when you bend or too short/baggy in the leg (for the gents) or the chest (for the ladies).
You’ll need to be wearing ‘grippy’ socks for the POWMAX machine sessions and the POWMAT mat classes. In the high-intensity POWMIX class you’ll need to be wearing ‘grippy’ socks or thin-soled, indoor trainers (preferred) as well as little gloves (similar to weightlifting gloves).
We have ToeSox and gloves available to buy at the studio when you arrive.
We set up our workshops to give either professionals or clients access to a focussed weekend of Pilates workouts coupled with an insight into the exercises and equipment to improve personal knowledge and performance. You will spend 6 hours a day over a 3 day period exercising and learning the rationale and experimenting with flow and practising the repertoire. Each workshop is focussed on honing each exercise and technique to perfection through practice and observation.
You must be mat-qualified.

We offer three reformer courses, a bench course and a smaller equipment course. All are structured in the same way and will give you excellent knowledge and confidence to add reformer, bench and smaller equipment into your sessions. All courses include access to the studio, observation of qualified teachers, teaching practice, formative assessment in the form of feedback, summative assessment in the form of a final practical exam and studio management – managing different client needs within a session.
Reformer Courses: Each reformer course (Orange, Blue or Green) gives you a selection of exercises from the full reformer repertoire and teaches you how to select them according to the level of ability of the individual clients within a session (beginner, intermediate or advanced). You’ll cover exercises in depth and from each category (flexion, extension, circumduction and rotation) giving you enough knowledge to teach a full and balanced reformer session.
Bench Course: Our bench course gives you a strong repertoire in bench exercises as well as the confidence to add to that repertoire and regress or progress the exercises depending on the level of the client or clients that you’re teaching.
Smaller Equipment Course: This course covers the Wunda Chair, Ped-a-Pul, Slope & Ladder Barrel, all great additions to a studio to give variety and complexity to any repertoire. As with all equipment, any client can use these machines and we’ll give you a great repertoire in each, as well as the confidence to regress or progress or add any exercise for the level of your client.

The reformer repertoire is broken out into 3 different courses (Reformer Purple, Green & Orange). Each course can be done alone as a single module or as a whole.
